Republican U.S Rep. John Rutherford is calling for unity in the country ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, saying he will be attending the event virtually.
Rutherford says there’s been a lot of talk about this being the first virtual inauguration anyway. He says his decision to not be there in person is not due to concerns about security. He thinks the event will be safe.
“I’m going to attend virtually, and I suspect I’ll probably have the best seat in the house,” Rutherford says.
He says he believes security is prepared this time around, unlike earlier this month when lawmakers were trying to certify the presidential election. But he’s also curious to look into what happened at the U.S Capitol and what could have been done differently.
Rutherford says he’s ready to get back to work on make the United States a better country. He says that includes showing people the system in place works and there isn’t a double standard if the country is run the way it should be.
“The hypocrisy we see all over the country has got to stop,” Rutherford says.
WOKV reached out to Democrat U.S. Rep. Al Lawson for his take on the inauguration but he did not get back with a comment. Republican Reps. Kat Cammack and Michael Waltz say they will call into Jacksonville’s Morning News on Wednesday with their thoughts.
