Morgan Wallen cancels Mississippi concert after losing voice

OXFORD, Miss. — Country music star Morgan Wallen abruptly canceled his Sunday night concert in Mississippi after saying he had lost his voice.

Wallen, 29, was scheduled to perform at Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford on the campus of the University of Mississippi, the Clarion-Ledger reported. Wallen performed at the stadium on Saturday night before a sold-out crowd. It was the first concert in the stadium’s history,

There were more than 60,000 fans at the concert venue and the two opening acts had already performed Sunday when it was announced that Wallen would not appear because he was having issues with his voice, according to the newspaper.

Video boards inside the football stadium displayed the message, adding that concertgoers would be refunded their money from the place where they bought their tickets, WTVA reported.

In a statement, Wallen said his voice “is shot,” according to The Tennessean.

“After last night’s show I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor and working through my vocal exercises trying to get better,” Wallen said. “I really thought I’d be able to take the stage and it kills me to deliver this so close to showtime, but my voice is shot and I am unable to sing.

“All tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. I am so sorry, I promise you guys I tried everything I could.”

Wallen won the 2022 Academy of Country Music Album of the Year with “Dangerous: The Double Album.” His current hit, “Last Night,” is No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Sunday’s cancellation came after Wallen tumbled off the stage during an encore at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday. Wallen was singing “Heartless,” his collaboration with Diplo, when the fog onstage clouded his view, according to People. Wallen disappeared into the smoke but immediately bounced back up, never missing a beat as he continued to sing, the magazine reported.

Wallen is touring in support of his third studio album, “One Thing at a Time,” which was released in March, People reported. His 36-song effort includes hits like “Last Night” and “Thinkin’ Bout Me.”

The album has been atop the Billboard 200 albums chart for six weeks.

Controversy has followed Morgan before. He was caught on camera in 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee, yelling a racial slur and profanities. He apologized but was suspended indefinitely from his record label and his music was pulled from radio stations.
