NOVATO, Calif. — A Northern California man said he is lucky to be alive after he avoided an out-of-control car that was barreling toward him as he took a morning walk.

“I’m still tingling. I still want to pinch myself. Is this real? And it is,” Ralph Macia, of Novato, told KGO. “If you see the Ring camera, I said ‘Oh my God.’”

The crash was caught on a Ring home security camera, according to the television station.

Novato police said the driver of a Toyota Camry lost control on San Marin Drive, jumped a curb and careened onto Simmons Lane, crashing into a house. In the process, the vehicle barely missed Macia.

“I’m walking up, I see out of the corner of my eye, and I jump,” Macia told KGO. “The reaction is from going to gym and doing crossovers with a trainer.”

Police said the driver of the Camry suffered a medical emergency seconds before the crash.

Homeowner Dot Spaet said the exterior of her residence suffered damage. She added that she heard what “sounded like a crash.”

“I was at my computer getting ready to send an email, then it was like a crash,” she told KGO.

Spaet said she called 911 when they saw the crashed car in their front yard with two people inside.

The driver of the Camry and the passenger were injured and taken to an area hospital, according to the television station.

Macia said he was glad the driver and passenger were expected to survive, and credited his quick reflexes for avoiding serious injury and possibly death.

“In a few seconds, I scrambled out of the way,” Macia said. “I was very fortunate. Something bigger than me was watching out.”
