Actress Georgia Holt, mother of Cher, dead at 96

Actress Georgia Holt, the mother of singer-actress Cher, died Saturday. She was 96.

Cher, 76, posted a brief message on Twitter early Sunday, noting that “Mom is gone,” followed by a sad-faced emoji.

The cause of death is not known. Neither Cher nor other members of Holt’s family shared any additional details, “Today” reported. A representative for Cher confirmed Holt’s death to Fox News Digital.

In late August, Cher tweeted that Holt “has had a rough year.”

The following month, the singer tweeted an apology for her absence on social media as Holt was facing some health issues, noting that her mother had been battling pneumonia.

“Sorry I’ve Been Mia,” she wrote in a tweet.

Holt appeared in episodes of various sitcoms during the 1950s, including “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” and “I Love Lucy,” according to IMDb.com.

Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch on June 9, 1926, in Kensett, Arkansas. She was the daughter of 13-year-old Lynda Inez Gulley and 21-year-old Roy Malloy Crouch, according to People.

During her career, she appeared in several films, including uncredited roles in 1950′s “A Life of Her Own” and 1951′s “Father’s Little Dividend.”

In the 1980s, Holt recorded an album, “Honky Tonk Woman,” “Today” reported. It was eventually released in 2013 and included a duet with Cher titled “I’m Just Your Yesterday.”

Holt and Cher also collaborated on the 2013 documentary, “Dear Mom, Love Cher.”

Holt also made appearances on “The Mike Douglas Show” and “The Merv Griffin Show” in 1979 and 1980, according to People.

Holt was married seven times to six men, including Cher’s father, John Paul Sarkisian, “Today” reported. She remained in a relationship with Craig Spencer from 1976 until her death.
