Jacksonville, Fl — Early this morning city crews began taking down the Confederate memorial in downtown St. Augustine. They are setting it on the ground, and it will eventually be relocated to Trout Creek Fish Camp several miles away.
The memorial has been located in the Plaza de la Constitucion since 1879. In June, the City Commission voted to remove the memorial.
The city had taken up the issue of moving the memorial in 2017, but instead decided to install plaques to provide historical context. This spring protests spawned by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis renewed calls for the monument to be moved.
