The disappearance and gruesome murder of Somer Thompson shook the community beginning in 2009.
“We do encourage everyone in the area to search outside their home, search outside areas they are familiar with,” Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler pleads to public shortly after Somer’s disappearance.
Somer disappeared walking home from Grove Park Elementary School in Orange Park on October 19, 2009. Then just two days later, Somer’s mom Diena heard the devastating news. Somer’s lifeless body was found in a South Georgia landfill.
“I just love her and I’ll miss her,” Diena expressed after hearing the news.
On February 11, 2010, Jarred Harrell was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography, and it was then that he was officially named a person of interest in the case.
Harrell now faces charges of child molestation of a 3-year-old girl, possession of child pornography, and the murder of Somer Thompson.
The case may take a step further Friday afternoon as Harrell will stand before a judge in Clay County Court.
WOKV has reached out to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the State Attorney's Office and Public Defender, but no confirmation yet of a possible plea deal or admission of guilt from Harrell.
