JSO detective on administrative leave after “gang unit” investigation leads to shooting

JSO officer fires weapon, 4 arrested

HIGHLANDS, Fla. — Updated 12:45 a.m.:

Around 9:30 p.m. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office gang unit was conducting surveillance on multiple individuals.

A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective was sitting in his car when two individuals started to approach him. One of the individuals had a rifle.

The detective then turned on his lights to let them know he was law enforcement and exited the car.

The suspect pointed a rifle at the detective.

The detective then fired multiple rounds, at this time JSO believes no one hit from the shots fired.

The suspects ran and the search effort began to apprehend them.

Officers found one individual on the roof of a home, while they were conducting surveillance.

Four more individuals were taken into custody from that same home.

Police have been able to identify the two individuals who approached officer.

The detective was placed on administrative leave per JSO policy.

A search warrant for the house is still pending, so officers haven’t been inside yet.

Chief Brian Kee held a news conference in reference to the officer involved shooting that occurred in the evening hours of Thursday, June 24, 2021, in the Highlands area.
