Young mother improving days after her 5-month-old twins, father were killed

A young mother is showing signs of improvement just days after her father and her 5-month-old twins were killed.

Megan Hiatt, 22, is the only survivor in a violent murder-suicide. She’s now in critical, but stable condition after being shot in the head.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says her boyfriend, Gawain Rushane Wilson, 28, shot the family then turned the gun on himself inside the Oceanway home at 1342 Shirley Oaks Drive Friday afternoon.

A report identified the victims as 5-month-old twin girls Hayden Rose Hiatt and Kayden Reese Hiatt and the girls’ grandfather Travis James Hiatt, 49.

A neighbor told our sister station Action News Jax that Megan Hiatt needed three surgeries late Friday and early Saturday in order to save her life.

JSO director Mike Bruno said the incident appeared to have spawned from a domestic issue.

Police said they will continue to investigate this shooting and will release any new details as they are discovered.
