Volunteers help clean up Jax Beach after fireworks

Jax Beach cleanup Volunteers fill their trash bags with garbage left behind after the fireworks show at Jacksonville Beach on Thursday, July 4, 2013 (Matt Augustine)

Plenty of trash was left on Jacksonville Beach after last night's fireworks show and this morning some helpful volunteers woke up early to help pick it up.

"After last night, it was just...disgusting," says volunteer Alex Hamilton

Hamilton and his friends were up with the sun this morning to help clean up. They say they were camping out last night and came to the beach to see the sunrise when they noticed all the trash and saw volunteers gathering, so they felt obligated to join in.

"This is our money, this is what we have. People come here for our beaches and we need to take care of them," said one of Hamilton's friends who was also volunteering.

They say it’s sad people want to come out here, party, and make a mess but not clean it up. Jennifer Burns is one of the volunteers checking people in and handing out bags at the Beach Boulevard beach access. She says it was not as bad at her location as she heard it was at the other two locations where volunteers were stationed at Atlantic Beach and 16th Street.

"The beach is a public area so it's for everyone's enjoyment and everyone should have a part in keeping it clean for everyone else and the marine life," says Burns.

The cleanup ran from 7 to 9 a.m. and spanned from Atlantic Beach down to the Duval county line in Ponte Vedra.
