Jacksonville, FL — Residents of Atlantic Beach can sign up to volunteer and help the police at the same time.
“We have everything from greeters in the front lobby, to volunteers who are helping people sign up for emergency alerts. We have volunteers who are walking our parks for additional security and working special events with traffic and pedestrians,” says Atlantic Beach Police Chief Michelle Cook.
Cook says so far, the department has 19 volunteers, but will take as many as they can get. Potential volunteers would go through orientation and training. Each volunteer wears a blue shirt with an official ABPD volunteer logo and will have their ABPD Volunteer credentials with them.
She says volunteers are appreciated for many reasons, including the many tasks they can do that help free up sworn officers to assume other police duties.
“The additional eyes and ears of our volunteers will insure everyone that stays and visits in Atlantic Beach stays safe,” adds Cook.
Anyone who would like to volunteer can call 247-5859 and ask for Lt. David Cameron.
