Jacksonville, FL — Amazingly, everyone survived a major crash on the Dames Point Bridge on I-295 heading northbound, which ended with a semi truck trailer in the St. Johns River.
The crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol shows one driver had serious injuries, while three others had only minor injuries after the four-vehicle crash, just before 1:00 PM Friday.
According to the report, a tow truck was disabled and was slowing to a stop in the right lane. A pick-up truck tried to avoid hitting the tow truck, by changing lanes, but still hit the side, causing both trucks to spin into traffic. FHP says the pick-up truck then hit a red sedan that was in the left lane.
Behind all of this, a semi truck in the left lane tried to swerve to the right, but ended up hitting the pick-up truck and then stuck the outside concrete barrier wall. That's when the trailer from the semi went over the wall and into the water. The semi’s cab managed to stay on the bridge.
The crash report says the red sedan and the pick-up truck came to a stop, blocking the bridge's inside lane, while the tow truck blocked the center and outside lanes.
FHP says it’s the driver of the pick-up truck that had to be taken to the hospital for his injuries.
The Coast Guard says the semi’s trailer is currently sitting in about 3 to 4 feet of non-navigable waters, so it's not in the way of any boats or other vessels. The trailer is expected to stay in the water for several days until a barge can come retrieve it. The Coast Guard says they were told the trailer contained bottles of water.
As for the damage to the bridge, itself, FHP says the bridge is structurally safe for traffic. The Florida Department of Transportation has been on the bridge for hours, working to install a guard rail to temporarily fix the wall.
