Jacksonville — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says two officers have been placed on administrative leave, following a fatal shooting on the Northside.
According to JSO Assistant Chief Scott Dingee, the officers were patrolling the parking lot of Motel 6 on Dunn Avenue, when they came across a vehicle with an open trunk. He says when officers ran the license plate, it became clear the tag on this vehicle was not the one assigned to it. That's when they discovered the car had been reported stolen from Macon, Georgia, on December 7th.
As they were continuing that investigation, police say a woman came from the motel and approached the officers. When questioned, she said the vehicle belonged to her boyfriend, who was still inside. One of the officers then took her into custody.
As this was happening, a man then walked out of the motel and began to approach the officers, allegedly holding both a bag and a gun.
JSO says the officers commanded the man to drop the bag, which he did, but he was still holding the gun.
"The primary officer, the FTO [field training officer], then engaged in a brief physical struggle over the handgun with this subject, during which time the officer discharged his departmentally-issued firearm multiple times, striking the subject. He was deceased at the scene" says Dingee.

According to JSO, evidence from the scene indicates that the man fired at least one time at the officer.
The officers were not hit by the gunfire, but we’re told one of them was injured from the physical struggle. He was taken to the hospital and is said to be in good condition.
The sheriff's office says the man killed has not yet been identified. They're also not yet naming the officers involved.
JSO says it's still a very active investigation, as they look into the circumstances behind the stolen car and what led up to the physical struggle.
