Remembering 9/11: Congressman John Rutherford

Jacksonville FL — Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York Washington DC and Pennsylvania and as we reflect on that day, Congressman John Rutherford tells us law enforcement officers changed how they did business after 9/11. At the time of the attacks, Rutherford says he was the Director of Corrections for JSO and he later went on to become Sheriff before heading to Washington DC.

“No longer was I just fighting crime, I was fighting potential terrorism”. Rutherford says.

He tells me he would tell his officers that he didn’t want to be the best first responder to a potential terrorist incident, he wanted to make sure it never happened in the first place.

“We got to be able to respond, but we need to be working on prevention not response”. Rutherford says.

In the wake of that day, he says similar to most American’s lives, he has never been the same.
