Putnam Sheriff shows body camera video from deadly weekend shooting involving deputies

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — New body camera video shows the moment just before Putnam County deputies opened fire on a carjacking suspect.

Putnam County Sheriff “Gator” DeLoach said Phillip Allen Baldwin was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital.

Video shows deputies ask the 31-year-old to put his hands up several times.

In the video, Baldwin is seen backing away and then reaching for a gun.

The video shows the moment the deputies saw the gun, three deputies fired several times.

PCSO said it first got a call Friday night about an armed carjacking in Satsuma. As they responded, dispatchers got another call just after midnight from less than three miles away about what witnesses described as the same suspect threatening neighbors with a gun.

When deputies arrived, they spotted Baldwin, who has a long criminal history in Putnam, including 13 arrests since 2012 on charges such as battery, larceny, and probation violations.

DeLoach said during a news conference on Monday deputies did everything they could to get him to surrender.

“At the end of the day, we knew we were dealing with an armed carjacking suspect who had just committed a violent crime and victimized a poor, innocent person prior to this,” DeLoach said.

A family friend, who asked not to be identified, said Baldwin was struggling with mental health issues and was otherwise harmless.

“He was one of those people like you could tell he was going through something, but he still always kept to smile on his face and I think like within the past couple of weeks he can start going downhill,” they said.

Those three deputies who fired shots are on administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
