JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Fire Station 63 had it’s official groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning.
Fire Staion 63 is located off of Gate Parkway and currently has a temporary mobile home station. However the groundbreaking on Wednesday would give the firefighters a permanent larger building. The temporary station opened last year.
The six-person crew was one of the first crews to show up to a massive apartment fire in January that resulted in a three-alarm fire. Chief Keith Powers at the time and at the ceremony said that Fire Station 63 played a huge role in helping contain the fire.
Mayor Lenny Curry was one of the speakers at the event and talked about the importance of respecting and recognizing the role firefighters and police officers serve everyday.
“I never imagined though, we’d be where we are right now, where there’s some level of sympathy for disrespect for men and women that serve in a public safety role every day. And unfortunately, that’s what’s happening in parts of this country,” Curry said. “We’re not going to let it happen in Jacksonville. We’re going to stand with the men and women that work to keep us safe. Firemen and women, policemen and women, all those who get up and do the hard work every day. So I’m proud to continue to be a part of investing in men and women that are willing to run into burning buildings on any given day.”
