Old shipwreck that washed ashore in St. Johns County will be moved

Shipwreck washes ashore in Ponte Vedra Beach (Action News Jax)

Local archaeologists are now working to move a piece of shipwreck that washed ashore at Guana State Park.

What appears to be a piece of an old ship hull was first seen Wednesday. A team with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum responded to record data, do drawings, and otherwise investigate the debris, but they were not allowed to initially move it. We were told the State is responsible for determining the next steps- and now, the archaeologists have received permission to move the shipwreck up the beach to protect it against the tide and waves.

They are working on a plan for the move, but absent that, they say they will secure the shipwreck to try to protect it.

They’re asking you to avoid the area and not touch the debris, because of their efforts to preserve it.
