NWS to investigate Jax Westside for potential tornado

Tropical Storm Colin damage Trees were uprooted and fell across I-10 and Chaffee Road on Jacksonville's westside.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville is set to investigate whether a tornado touched down on Jacksonville’s Westside.

The area of concern is around I-10 and Chaffee, where a semi was toppled over in the storm and trees were damaged to the point of obstructing the highway. NWS Jacksonville Meteorologist Ben Nelson says it’s possible that was the result of a tornado.

“Particularly when you start to see trailers overturned and the type of damage that we’re seeing in photo evidence,” Nelson says.

The storm survey will take place Tuesday morning.

“We look for a chaotic damage pattern that would be indicative of potentially a tornado versus a straight line type of wind damage,” Nelson says.

NWS Jacksonville is also considering doing a survey in Middleburg over reports of a funnel cloud that was spotted. They were also initially considering a site in Nassau County off 301 where Emergency Management had received reports of a sighting, but they have ruled that out for a survey.
