New St. Johns County school to be named “Tocoi Creek High School”

Name, mascot for St. Johns County’s High School “HHH” to be announced Tuesday (Action News Jax)

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida — The St. Johns County School board has announced the name for the new “HHH” High School Tuesday morning. The school will be named Tocoi Creek High School.

High School HHH Principal Jay Willets facilitated a community survey and two community meetings to solicit input on potential names for High School HHH. The top three names for the high school was River Valley high School, Tocoi Creek High School, and Tolomato High School.

Tocoi Creek High School would pay homage to the site of the Timucuan village that is within the school zone on the St. Johns River. The village eventually turned into a Spanish Mission, steamboat port and railway station for commerce and tourism for St. Augustine.

There was discussion by the board to name the school “North River High School” as it both tributes the Tolomato Indians who lived on “the river north of St. Augustine” and was easier to pronounce. However it was eventually dismissed after the survey results showed it was one of the last options chosen by the public.

The school colors are burnt orange, black, and gunmetal grey.

The choice for the mascot still has not been decided. The following are the top options selected by community members:

  • Bulls
  • Cyclones
  • Hornets
  • Hurricanes
  • Longhorns
  • Moccasins
  • Razorbacks
  • Tigers
  • Toros
  • Vikings
  • Vipers

The school is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2021.
