Jacksonville, FL — Hoping to keep up with the growth in calls and in population-- a new fire station is being built in St. Johns County.
Construction has started on what will be Fire Station 19, right near Racetrack Road and Veterans Parkway.
St. Johns County Fire and Rescue tells our partner Action News Jax, that it hopes this new station will help bring down response times in the surrounding area.
"We do have multiple stations that are currently serving that area, but as that development has expanded its ground, it’s become more dense from a population standpoint," says Jeremy Robshaw, the Deputy Chief of St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
But he says as Northwestern St. Johns County continues to grow, it was critical to have something more efficient.
"As that area continues to grow and has been growing, not only are we seeing call volume increase, but we’re seeing the population increase rapidly," says Robshaw.
Construction on the new fire station should be complete by summer of 2020.
