New bill would force FDLE to investigate all deadly officer-involved shootings

It's a new bill hoping to eliminate bias, or at least perceived bias.

A state senator out of Orlando has introduced a bill that would no longer allow police departments to investigate their own officers, if they're involved in a deadly shooting.

Instead, the investigations would be up to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The FDLE would also have to be notified of deadly officer-involved shootings within a specific time frame.

Right now in Northeast Florida, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the St. Johns Sheriff's Office are the only agencies that conduct their own investigations and that's led to a few lawsuits over the years.

Recently the police-involved death of D'Angelo Stallworth led to a lawsuit and even a protest, after an attorney for his family claimed Stallworth was shot in the back and did not have a weapon.  But JSO's investigation has deemed the shooting justified.

The lawmaker behind the bill is holding a news conference to release all the details in Tallahassee later today.
