Naval Station Mayport set to hold security drills through Thursday; some delays expected

The USS Fort McHenry has returned to Naval Station Mayport with more than 300 sailors aboard, who get to see their families for the first time in 7 months.

The McHenry was supporting maritime security operations in Europe and the Middle East, according to the Navy.

The ship was part of the more than 4,500 Sailors and Marines serving in the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

While deployed, they participated in military exercises & made port calls in the Baltics, Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea & the Middle East that the Navy said deepened existing relationships with allies & partner nations.

The McHenry was named for Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore, which inspired Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the War of 1812.

That poem, set to music, became our country’s national anthem in 1931.

The ship has 22 officers and 391 enlisted people on its crew.

It’s a good idea to give yourself a little extra time if you have anything to do at Naval Station Mayport over the next few days.

The base is holding security exercises Tuesday through Thursday. You can expect an increase in emergency vehicles on the installation, slowdowns getting through gates and the sound of simulated gunfire.

“This is a naturally-occurring event that we do all the time to test our guys, test their abilities to respond to any kind of threats that may occur,” says Master at Arms Senior Chief Sean Stull.

He says anyone with a medical appointment at Mayport should plan a little more time than normal since there’s a good chance of delays. Stull says most of the drills will take place during working hours.

“They’ll also be able to make all their appointments and everything, there will just be some slowdowns,” Stull says.

This week’s drills are not in response to anything that’s happened in recent months, it’s just a normal exercise that takes place on a regular basis.
