Nassau murder-suicide motivated by ten year grudge

A murder-suicide in Nassau County was motivated by a ten year grudge.

It’s the motive deputies have uncovered during their ongoing investigation which started late Tuesday. We’re told 59-year-old Allen Fortunia was at a Walmart in Yulee when he saw Steven Swan, who used to be his supervisor at a Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay shipyard. Nassau County Undersheriff George Lueders says Fortunia blamed Swan and another supervisor for him losing his job in 2005.

When Fortunia saw Swan, Lueders says something snapped.

“He [Fortunia] states on the 911 call that it was chance, happenstance. That it was good for him and bad for his victim,” Lueders says.

Former coworkers told deputies that Fortunia had made threats against Swan over the past ten years. Fortunia also had an injunction for protections issued against him as the result of a divorce in 2005 and had been Baker Acted in 2007.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office released the 911 calls Fortunia made from his home during the SWAT standoff.

"I want you to do me a favor," he says.  "I want you to confirm to me that the person that I killed in the Walmart parking lot was Steve Swan.  I can't live with myself if I thought I killed somebody that was...wasn't him."

Earlier in the conversation, Fortunia blamed Swan for when he lost his job at Kings Bay.

"This guy kept coming after me," he says.  "Until eventually he got me laid off as a threat to the nation under the Patriot Act."

Surveillance footage from Walmart show Fortunia ran over Swan outside of the store and then beat him. Swan died.

Walmart security tried to detain Fortunia, but Lueders says he fled to his home in Fernandina Beach. He built a makeshift bomb, which never exploded, and ultimately shot himself in the head.

Fortunia was a former Florida Air National Guard member. Investigators say notes found at his home show he had been suicidal.

Kings Bay released the following statement on Steven Swan: "He was greatly admired throughout the entire command and a well respected leader here. His passing has shocked and impacted everyone here and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family Friends and coworkers," said Mark Turney, public affairs officer for Trident Refit Facility at Kings Bay.

Swan's friend and neighbor, David Lee, remembered him as an "excellent family person" who "was always out there with his kids."

"I can't even fathom why someone would do this to him," Lee said. "You couldn't ask for a finer person."
