With the start of the next school year only seven weeks away, the Nassau County School District is in the process of planning for the return of students to campuses.
Nassau Superintendent Dr. Kathy Burns says the district plans to follow the recommendations recently released by the Florida Department of Education, which has two big ideas:
- Keeping the education community safe
- Ensuring that students receive a first-class education
To help achieve these goals, Burns says she has put together a task force to get input and suggestions for reopening schools. The group includes teachers, school district leaders, parents, medical professionals, elected officials, law enforcement officers, emergency operations personnel, business partners, and union leadership.
Burns says this task force has already started their work and should have a detailed plan ready to release by early July.
To help with the planning process, the district will be releasing a survey the week of June 29th- July 3rd for parents/guardians to fill out and state whether they plan on having their kids return to campus this fall. Burns says it's important for the district to get an accurate count on how many students will be returning.
The first day of the 2020/2021 school year for Nassau County public schools is set for August 10th.
