A former Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Correction Deputy was arrested Tuesday, accused of abusing a 4-year-old autistic child.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation into Mason Codi Moore began Wednesday when Wolfson Children’s Hospital reported that it suspect a child patient had been abused. The director of the Child Protection Team said significant bruising was found on the nonverbal child that didn’t match up with Moore’s explanation of the injuries.

Following an investigation and interviews with Moore, Deputies determined that the force Moore allegedly used against the child was unlawful.

“As law enforcement officers, we’re held to the highest standards of conduct, and we take any allegations of abuse extremely seriously, especially when they involve our most vulnerable citizens,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “The evidence in this case clearly showed that a serious crime was committed against a defenseless child.
