NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — The Nassau County Board of Commissioners has decided to extend the mask mandate for thirty days but not without thinking about reversing this order in the future.
Schools starting was a major factor in why the mask mandate continued. According to the Florida Department of Health, Nassau County is seeing a positivity rate of 10.8 percent, but if the data from long-term care facilities was taken out, the positivity rate is closer to six percent.
Commissioner Aaron Bell said that while he would support the mask mandate extension, but he wants to create a criteria where they can eventually move the mandate back to being optional.
“We can’t continue this forever. I think it’s wise to continue it because we’ve just gone back to school and we don’t know how that’s going to affect us,” Bell said.
The mandate went into effect on July 3 and it requires face coverings at all indoor public spaces where social distancing is not possible.
“If it’s an inconvenience to make it mandated - but it safes a life then it’s work it - one life gone is too many,” Commissioner Danny Leeper said when the initial mandate passed.
