Nassau County beaches tentatively set to reopen on May 6th with restricted hours, activities

Jacksonville, FL — Following in the footsteps of leaders in Duval and St. Johns counties, the Nassau County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday morning to reopen their beaches for essential activities, like exercise, on May 6th.

The beaches in Nassau County would also have restricted hours once open. Access would only be allowed from 6AM until 12PM each day.

"I think, you know, the more the beach for walking and biking, I think that would be perfectly fine, because, if anything, I think it's going to make us more healthy," said County Commissioner Aaron Bell.

However, county commissioners have said this date is still subject to change.

Nassau County’s coastline has parts managed by the state, county, and by the City of Fernandina Beach, so they want this to be a coordinated effort. However, city leaders in Fernandina Beach voted this week to keep the beaches there closed for now.

City, county, and state officials say they plan to continue discussions to develop a coordinated plan. If they are able to reach an agreement, beaches could re-open sooner than May 6th.
