Originally BPD cleared Officer Bryce Sasser of any wrongdoing after he slammed a 13-year-old to the ground. to
Sasser approached Colt Gordon in front of his house for not having lights on his bicycle while riding at night.
According to a police report, Colt Gordon attempted to run back to his house and that’s when the officer threw the teen to the ground. Now after heavy scrutiny from some community members, the GBI will conduct an independent review.
Action News Jax first reported on the case Tuesday.
“I want to make sure this can’t happen to another child. He doesn’t need to be a police officer,” Nicole Gordon, Colt’s mother, said. She and Colt’s father filed a complaint against the police department in September.

Just this past Saturday, the police department announced the officer was cleared for his use of force. According to the statement, the department received new video last Friday that showed a different view of the incident that was not evident in Sasser’s body camera video.
“It is the City of Brunswick’s desire to have an independent agency review the incident and actions to determine if those actions were within the scope of the law,” the updated release on Thursday stated.
“I definitely believe we are slowly moving in the right direction,” Colt’s father, Ryan, said.
BPD said once the investigation is complete, the results will be shared with all concerned parties.
