11-month-old baby critically hurt, babysitter questioned

A baby living on Bunker Hill Court in Mayport is in life-threatening condition today and police have arrested the babysitter.

It happened at the Ribault Bay Village in the 1000 block of Bunker Hill Court in Mayport just off of Assissi Lane.  According to police, 29-year-old Rickey Valentine was watching four children younger than five including an 11-month-old baby boy.

Police say he called 9-1-1 around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning because the baby was unresponsive and not breathing.  Doctors at Shands told police the baby had sustained very severe non-accidental trauma to the back of the neck.  A member of the First Coast Child Protection Team also told JSO the baby had been physically abused, and the injuries could not have been inflicted by the other children in the home.
The baby's mother said she had left the house around 8 and the baby was fine, but that Valentine called her before calling 9-1-1 to let her know that the baby wasn't breathing.

The boy is in life-threatening condition at Shands but doctors expect him to survive.

JOhn Harrell with the Florida Department of Children and Families is reminding everyone that with the new laws for reporting child abuse that have just gone into effect this week, it is mandatory for people to report abuse or neglect.

"It doesn't just have to be a parent.  It could be a babysitter or someone else who, maybe caring for children, might hurt children...basically the laws have been strengthened.  These are now some of the toughtest child abuse prevention laws in the country.  We need people, if they see something, to say something."

Valentine has been taken into custody and charged with aggravated child abuse.

The Department of Children and Families is still investigating.
