Middleburg store clerk lends $3, solves robbery

Maybe the saying "no good deed goes unpunished" isn't always true after all.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office quickly closes the book on a robbery that happened at a sub shop in Middleburg Saturday night, all thanks to the kindness of a convenience store clerk.

The Flash Foods clerk told a Clay County deputy that stopped in around 4 a.m. Sunday she'd "done her good deed for the day" and lent $3 to a man in an old truck for gas, and said he even left his wallet and ID as proof he'd return and pay her back.

Turns out the guy on the ID matched the description of someone who robbed the Larry's Giant Subs on Blanding and Knight Boxx Rd. around 8:20 Saturday night, and when he came back to the gas station to return the money, police confronted him and he confessed to the Larry's robbery.

Police have identified him as Brian Jeffers and he has priors dating back to 2007 that include fraudulent use of a credit card, petit theft, burglary, and dealing in stolen property.

So basically the guy had the integrity to return the $3 he borrowed, but lacked the integrity to not rob the Larry's of $200.
