Man linked to death of Nassau deputy enters guilty plea

A man connected to the death of a Nassau County deputy entered a guilty plea on Wednesday to the charge of illegally re-entering the United States.

Francisco Portillo-Fuentes has not been charged in the death of Deputy Eric Oliver, who was hit by a vehicle and killed while pursuing him, but the State still has the right to pursue addition charges against the suspect.

According to U.S. Border Patrol, Portillo-Fuentes admitted to coming back into the country just days before being chased by Oliver down State Road 200 in Yulee. Oliver was backing up border agents when a woman driving an S.U.V. struck the deputy, killing him.

The attorney for Portillo-Fuentes does not believe his client should be charged in the death of Oliver.

A sentencing hearing date is still to be determined.
