Lawsuit filed against DCPS, claims school knew about student’s allergy that led to her death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The father of a high school student who died in 2023 is suing Duval County Public Schools.

Kayleen Brown had an allergic reaction after she was served baklava with nuts in it, according to the lawsuit.

It happened at Atlantic Coast High School.

The lawsuit claims the school knew about her allergy and she was told no when she asked if there were nuts in the food.

The 17-year-old left the school and died three days later.

The lawsuit alleges the school was negligent by serving the food and allowing Kayleen to leave.

Action News Jax has reached out to DCPS for a statement on the suit and has not yet heard back.
