K9s United hosts 9K for K9s to support and honor canine law enforcement officers

St. Augustine — K9s United host 9K for K9s at the World Golf Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 21 at 8 a.m.. The annual event, now in its sixth year, supports K9 law enforcement units. Courses include a one-mile fun run, a 5k, a 9k - described as challenging - and a no excuse virtual option. Races are also open to all levels of runners and walkers of all levels.

The family friendly event also includes children’s activities, a photo booth with K9 heroes, enhanced K9 demonstrations and local vendors.

Families will also enjoy a special tribute celebrating K9 Chaos. Shot in the line of duty as Nassau County deputies investigated the death of Deputy Josh Moyers, Chaos has since made a full recovery, thanks in part to legislation signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2021. Today, K9s injured in the line of duty can receive onsite medical emergency treatment and transport to a veterinarian hospital via EMS vehicles. The proposal -SB 388 - also frees paramedics and emergency medical technician from criminal and civil liabilities when treating an injured police K9.

But that’s not the only K9 legislation Florida’s governor signed into law.

In May of 2019, Senate Bill SB96, the “Fang Memorial Bill,” was also signed. Named after the tragic death of K9 Fang, the legislation penalizes criminals who harm law enforcement animals. Fang had selflessly sacrificed his life for his handler, Officer Herrer.

Championed by K9′s United Founder, Debbie Johnson, the law makes killing a law enforcement canine in the line-of-duty a second-degree felony. Now, the maximum penalty in state prison can be 15 years with a fine of up to $15,000. The penalties also apply to harming fire, search-and-rescue dogs and mounted patrol units.

“Fang’s attacker didn’t get the sentence he deserved for brutally maiming and killing a police officer,” said Johnson. “That’s why we took drastic action to pursue justice for these heinous crimes.”

Johnson spoke of the importance of the relationship between officers and their K9 partners.

“We must recognize these K9s as professionals and family members who serve our communities,” she said.

The finance professional founded K9s United in 2015 after learning about the tragic death of Baron — a local K9 officer. Compelled to attend the officer’s funeral, she felt that God placed a mission “on her heart” to do more. Without hesitation, she attended the Civilian Law Enforcement Academy.

During a drive-along, she recognized the budget restraints for K9 units. After requesting and receiving a detailed list of needed supplies, Johnson birthed K9s United. Working in tandem with vendors, the organization strives to meet specific needs of the various agencies.

“Each agency is different,” she said, “but K9 Units have the same budgetary constraints and needs. We establish relationships between the agencies and vendors to negotiate discounts. Purchases are then donated directly to the K9 unit.”

Johnson explained that funding is strictly used to purchase and donate equipment. No money is sent to law enforcement agencies. Donations include first aid emergency kits, harnesses, leads, chew toys, bite sleeves, bite suits, and muzzles, heat alarms, door poppers, kennels and crates as well medical expenses and advanced training courses.

“Our vision will support, honor, strengthen and provide until every law enforcement K9 in need is served,” she said. “We’re here for the officers and K9s who are here for the community.”

The 501 3 (c) is predominately a volunteer-based organization with “very little employee salary overhead.”

“Our leadership is passionate for our mission, the willingness to stay true to our vision, and have a devotion to our K9 heroes,” she concluded.
