JTA holding public hearings on Fare Modification Proposal ahead of board meeting

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is holding two public hearings next week to discuss the details of the Fare Modification Proposal.

No matter what happens, there will not be any changes until the start of the next fiscal year, according to JTA.

“It’s been seven years since we’ve even had a conversation about adjusting our base fares,” says JTA spokesman David Cawton. “A single ride under this proposal would be $1.75 compared to $1.50.”

Cawton says they’ve tried to be as transparent as possible throughout the process by offering close to a dozen public meetings in June leading up to the hearings on Monday and Tuesday.

He says people who came got the chance to watch a video and pick up a pamphlet covering the proposal. They were also encouraged to fill out a survey.

“We collected more than 200 surveys from our customers asking for their feedback, asking for their suggestions and how this could impact them,” Cawton says.

He says for the most part, the people they heard from were pretty understanding once they got all the details.

Cawton says the changes would still keep JTA at or under the fares for similar organizations across the state, and they tried to make the changes incremental instead of doing anything drastic.

If you want to attend the hearings, the first one is Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s downtown campus. The second meeting is Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at 100 N. Myrtle Ave. in Building 1. A special JTA board meeting will follow that one from 1 to 2 p.m.
