JSO: Suspected Landing gunman 'clearly targeted' other gamers during Sunday's mass shooting

Jacksonville, FL — A day after the mass shooting at the Jacksonville Landing, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the FBI released new details on their ongoing investigation.

Sheriff Mike Williams says video surveillance from inside Chicago Pizza-- where the game bar is-- clearly shows there was only one gunman involved and that the gunman took his own life, after shooting victims.

Williams says they've also uncovered that the suspect, previously identified as David Katz, 24, carried two handguns and extra ammunition with him, but only ended up firing one of those guns, during the shooting.

Katz's guns were legally purchased in Baltimore, Maryland, from a licensed dealer, according to Williams. Williams believes the purchase may have been about two weeks ago. One of the guns was said to be a .45-caliber, the other, a 9-mm.

As to a possible motive, Williams says that remains under investigation, but it has become clear he intentionally targeted the Madden "19" video game tournament.

"The suspect clearly targeted other gamers, who were in the back room of Chicago Pizza participating in this gaming tournament. The suspect walked past patrons, who were in other parts of the business, and focused his attention on the gamers," says Williams.

Williams says JSO detectives are in Baltimore-- where Katz was from-- working with federal partners and looking into his background and his home. An FBI official says Katz's parents are being cooperative so far with the investigation.

Williams says they've already searched his car and his hotel room here in Jacksonville and are still analyzing those results.

Williams also clarified the victim count on Monday, saying there were 13 total victims, which includes the two who died. Williams adding 12 of the 13 victims were shot, some multiple times. Police say the suspect also killed himself and is not included in that victim count.

Williams says all of the surviving victims are expected to recover, as he credited the great work by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, paramedics, and hospital staff, saying as bad as this is, it could have been much worse.
