JSO investigating 'very rare' killing of inmate inside Duval County jail

Duval County Jail

Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate inside the Duval County jail, in which foul play is believed to be involved.

According to Brian Kee, the Assistant Chief of the Major Case Section at JSO, detectives were notified about a death at around 11:00 AM, Tuesday morning, on the fifth floor of the jail. In the area where this incident took place, described as 5 East, Kee says most of the inmates are all sentenced and are either awaiting transfer to state prison or have returned to Duval County for court proceedings.

Kee says there was some kind of altercation in one of the cells in this area, where three inmates were housed.

Investigators believe that one of the inmates beat another inmate to death, but Kee says they're looking to the medical examiner to determine an exact cause of death.

The third inmate in the cell was not involved, but is thought to be a witness and will be questioned. JSO is also looking at video evidence.

"This dormitory does have surveillance cameras. These cameras do contain valuable evidence that we are currently evaluating," says Kee.

Kee says this kind of an incident at the jail is 'very rare.'

"We were talking about the last time that there was ever an incident like this in Jacksonville and none of us can recall anything in recent memory. I mean, I've been here almost 23 years and I can't recall one," says Kee.

The name of the inmate who died is not being released, as police say next of kin notification is pending. The suspect is also not being named at this point.
