Jacksonville, FL — Between now and August 31st, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is encouraging everyone to register their home and business alarms in their new online registration system.
Sheriff Mike Williams says the old system was inefficient and had an ongoing problem with false alarms and outdated contact information.
Williams says that led to a waste of their time and resources.
Did you know that #JSO responds to around 45,000 alarm calls a year with over 98% of the alarms being false? https://t.co/cP3vSyNTlh …

"Based on calls for service, meaning that an alarm was triggered and verified by the company and a police officer was dispatched between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016, there were 47,461 police dispatches as a result of an alarm. This represents 38,000 hours of police service or the equivalent of 18 full-time police officers responding to these calls. And more than 98% of the time, these alarms were false," explains Williams.
JSO's new system will be able to identify an alarm that's not registered, people that aren't paying fees or fines for false alarms, and excessive false alarms at a single location.
"The goal here is to free up, really, some of the 38,000 hours of police service that we provide in this community that really is wasted, if you will, responding to false alarms," Williams says.
