JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jewish Community Alliance is hosting a cultural arts festival this week highlighting films and books celebrating the Jewish culture.
The JCA has promoted the importance of the arts with this festival for 27 years.
Festival Chair Whitney Kuvin, says it’s a much needed distraction as the war rages on between Israel and Hamas.
“You need to find some lightness in the dark times right now,” Kuvin says. “I think it’s important for the community right now. We need to feel that we have a place where we can go, where we can be together, and we can support each other. So it’s really about community and making sure everybody feels welcome.”
JCA CEO Adam Chaskin says that sharing Jewish culture with the public can help heal divides.
“It’s very important for the Jewish community to come together and to heal in times like this when there’s a war going on,” Chaskin says. “We do deal with the entire community, and we have that opportunity and therefore that responsibility to educate people from the entire community, so that we can again break down anti-semitism or other forms of hatred and bigotry.”
The cultural arts events run through Thursday- which are all free and open to everyone.
Tuesday, Nov. 14th’s event is a book club with Sara Confino, author of “She’s Up to No Good,” at the Ponte Vedra Library from noon to 1:30 p.m.
On Wednesday night at 7pm, two authors Richard Hurowitz and Larry Loftis will speak at the JCA on their books centered around the Jewish experience during the Holocaust.
And Thursday’s finale features author Adam Mansbach, who will discuss his new book, “The Golem of Brooklyn,” from 7pm to 8:30pm at the JCA, located at 8505 San Jose Boulevard in Southside.
