Jacksonville, Fl — Plans to move the Museum of Science and History to the vacant Shipyards property have received a major boost in the form of a $5 million donation from Jaguars owner Shad Khan.

The MOSH announced it is the largest private donation to its Genesis capital campaign.

Khan praises the proposal to build a new facility on the vacant riverfront property, which was first unveiled in mid-October. Khan’s donation would also help his interest in development to the northbank, including the Lot J sports and entertainment district that is planned.

WOKV has been following the debate over $200+ in economic incentives for the Lot J development for several months. On Friday, City Council President Tommy Hazouri announced there will be a Committee of the Whole meeting this Thursday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. to (approximately) 8 p.m. During this meeting, council members can propose any amendments they want to the legislation.

“The best downtown districts in the United States include urban parkland and cultural destinations, and we can have that here in Jacksonville with the Museum of Science and History anchoring a new riverfront park,” said Khan. “I’m hoping my contribution to the capital campaign will spark additional commitment from throughout the region so we can get started on a new downtown. I am confident it will, because I know I’m not the only person in Jax who believes it’s time to finally meet and even exceed our potential.”

MOSH was first chartered in 1941 and has been housed next to Friendship Park on the southbank.

“MOSH would like to express our sincere thanks to Shahid Khan and his family for committing to this remarkable investment in MOSH Genesis. This gift will not only propel the project forward, but serve as a wonderful example to others,” said Bruce Fafard, CEO of MOSH.
