JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An elderly woman is dead and another is in critical condition following a tragic traffic accident in the Hyde Park area this morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO). The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Hanson Dr. N.

The JSO Sergeant Action News Jax spoke with this morning described this event as unusual and tragic. He indicated there was no sign that the driver was intoxicated, although the driver had just completed an overnight shift.

According to JSO, two women in their 70s were struck by a vehicle while walking in the neighborhood. One woman died at the scene, while the other was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police also reported that a dog, which had been in a stroller with the woman, is missing.

JSO is currently investigating how the crash occurred. Sergeant Robert Hungerford stated that while the driver has stopped and is cooperating with authorities, potential charges are still under consideration due to the severity of the crash.

Sergeant Robert Hungerford stated: “We will conduct a thorough investigation, and once it is complete, we’ll present our findings to the State Attorney’s Office. The detective will provide input, and the State Attorney will decide whether criminal charges will be filed or if a traffic citation will be issued. There will be repercussions.”

With the holiday weekend underway, traffic safety remains a significant concern.
