Jacksonville officer critically injured in Sunday morning shooting, suspect dead

Jacksonville, FL — Update 4:30 p.m.

A routine traffic stop nearly a week ago turned into a violent Sunday morning for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. 32-year-old Tyliko Maduro reportedly fled the scene of a traffic stop March 19th, and then opened fire Sunday morning March 26th on officers who attempted to speak with him at his home.

Officer Malik Daricaud, 25, was shot in the neck and hospitalized.

“The officer is currently in the hospital fighting for his life,” said Sheriff T.K. Waters during a media briefing Sunday afternoon. “When I was there this morning he was in a lot of pain and was saying things. But the way it was explained to us, he was still in a really tenuous situation and we’re just hoping he makes a full recovery.”

Waters also said Daricaud is married with at least one child.

JSO says officers did not pursue Maduro when he fled the traffic stop about 11:20 p.m. March 19th, but later identified Maduro and attempted to speak with him at his home early Sunday morning. Officers did not have a warrant for Maduro’s arrest.

At around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, officers showed up at the home on Ridgeview Avenue and knocked on the door several times. Maduro did not answer, and his mother was called to the home to open the locked front door. JSO body cam video shows moments after she entered the home, Maduro fired shots. The SWAT team was called to the scene after the officer was shot. After negotiation attempts, Maduro reportedly took his own life.

According to JSO, Maduro fired multiple shots from inside the house with a semi-automatic weapon before taking his own life later Sunday. Sheriff Waters says no shots were fired by officers.

Maduro had no prior convictions, and JSO says it remains unclear why he fled the traffic stop March 19th after the officer asked him to take off his mask and exit the car.

March 26, 2023 11:45 a.m.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to an officer-involved incident off Morse Avenue Sunday morning and asked neighbors to shelter in place. JSO said one officer was shot and taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

At 9:21am, JSO tweeted: “As officers continue to peacefully resolve the situation and take the suspect in custody, it is imperative that citizens in the area of Morse Ave. and Ridgeview Ave. shelter in place.”

That shelter in place was lifted just before noon.

JSO says the officer’s family has been notified, but the officer’s name had not been released as of late Sunday morning.
