Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry is targeting June 1 as a date to reopen most city government offices.

He made the announcement this evening after a day where gyms reopened at 50 percent capacity while retail and restaurants expanded capacity to 50 percent.

“We’re bringing some employees back as early as this week, and we’ll continue that over the coming days,” Curry says.

He says Duval County Tax Collector Jim Overton will be opening another location this week, after opening the Hogan Branch last week, with another one expected to open next week. Meanwhile, Curry says both the Property Appraiser’s Office and the Supervisor of Elections Office will reopen on June 1.

He says the expanded reopening plans come as coronavirus numbers in the area continue to support the efforts so far.

“The thing I will always be monitoring is hospital capacity in conjunction with maybe an increase in cases,” Curry says. “That’s in conversations with hospital leaders and doctors.”

Curry says they’ll continue monitoring those numbers on a daily basis, but right now the path forward looks clear.
