Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to name new head coach, Byron Leftwich appears to be front-runner

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Wednesday came and went without Jacksonville Jaguars naming a new head coach.

And while no decision has been announced yet, the front-runner appears to be Byron Leftwich.

And with the “dominoes” a.k.a. other potential coaching candidates “falling” to other teams early Thursday -- Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett signing a deal to become the Denver Broncos’ new head coach and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus reportedly headed to Chicago to become the Bears’ new head coach -- it would seem all signs point to Leftwich.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said Leftwich “is the leader,” however, “the process remains fluid.

Schefter also reported that the New Orleans Saints have requested to interview Leftwich for their head coach position.

The Saints longtime head coach Sean Payton announced Tuesday that he is stepping down.

Leftwich is a familiar face for the Jaguars. He was the 7th overall pick for the team in 2003 and played quarterback for the Jaguars until 2006.

Most recently, Leftwich was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Bucs. He helped Tampa win a Super Bowl last year and helped Tom Brady produce over 5,000 yards passing and 43 touchdowns this year.
