Ron Johnson and his wife moved into a house two minutes from the school only three months ago and are now dealing with their first neighborhood crime.

“It’s just sad, it’s ridiculous,” Johnson said after seeing the damage done inside the elementary school.

The Ware County School District shared new pictures with Action News Jax showing how the inside of the school was found after a man broke into the building on Saturday morning.

Johnson never expected to see the school near his house, of all places, where someone would go to steal Christmas gifts. He doesn’t understand why anyone would do it.

“Some people just don’t care, it’s just the world we live in,” said Johnson.

The Ware County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aaron Johnson on Monday for the break-in. Deputies say he broke seven door windows at the school, stole students’ Christmas gifts and cards, and took teacher’s personal belongings, including a guitar and a Coach-brand bag.

Action News Jax’s Finn Carlin spoke with a mom living right down the road from the school, whose daughter went there when she was younger. She asked not to share her name but says the catching of a suspect doesn’t necessarily make her more at ease.

“It’s disgusting to steal from a school, any time of year,” she said, “it’s scary to send your kids to schools when you don’t know, on a daily basis, what’s going to happen anymore.”

Besides being wary, Waycross neighbors don’t understand why anyone would try to stop the holidays from being merry.

“I just don’t get this,” Johnson said, “to just go in, tear stuff up, take all sorts of things that might not be valuable, it just doesn’t make sense.”

The Ware County School District tells Action News Jax everything that was stolen from the school has been found and returned. The Ware County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the break-in, but Johnson is being held in jail without bond
