Jacksonville, FL — During the week of June 22nd – 26th, WOKV will be bringing you in-depth coverage of what you need to do before a potential hurricane makes it way into Northeast Florida. If you live in Duval County, Emergency Management Director Steve Woodard says due to the coronavirus pandemic this year, you might want to think about staying with family or friends instead of going to a public shelter if you have to evacuate. He says if you have to go to a public shelter, you’ll want to put protective items in your kit, like masks, hand-sanitizer and other protective equipment.
Another important point Woodard has is understanding the flooding risk for where you live.
“If you’re in a low-lying area, you need to know that and those are numerous through out the county.” Woodard says.
He suggests getting flood insurance now, since if something terrible happens to your home, the money that you’d get back from the insurance is typically greater than what FEMA pays out.
He says the big message this year is know your evacuation zone, have a kit and have a plan.
