“I felt like a little kid,” a mom from Yulee, who didn’t share her name, told Action News Jax, “I woke up at three o’clock in the morning, I just sat there and watched the snowfall. I was so excited, I barely got any sleep.”
The First Alert Weather Team started tracking snow from the winter storm as early as 6:30 PM Tuesday night, in parts of southeast Georgia. Families got to the hotel the night before to find wet roads from rain and sleet, to then wake up to a blanket of snow on the street.
“We’ve been waiting on this, to be able to play in the snow,” said Stacy Hill, who lives in Waycross. He says his family got up at 3:00 AM to head outside and his kids had never seen snow before today. Hill drove up to the Hampton Inn in his ATV at around 5:30 AM with his family on board.
“You see it on TV when you’re younger, and now you see it everywhere and it’s just like, it’s crazy,” said Hill’s daughter, Angelina.
Action News Jax’s Finn Carlin spoke with families who’d left work the night before, packed their kids in the car and drove to Waycross on a whim, just to see the snow.
“It was pretty magical, especially for the kids,” said Glenn Garrett, who brought his family up from Nassau County, “when I saw [my son’s] face, he walked out and was like ‘woah this is so cool!’”
The First Alert Weather Team is expecting bitter-cold temperatures to stay around over the next few mornings. First Alert Meteorologist Garrett Bedenbaugh says refreezing in southeast Georgia is possible, in any parts where snow doesn’t melt.
