First Alert Weather Day: Isolated tornado, flooding rain, lightning possible for N.E. FL

As Alberto continues to churn in the Gulf of Mexico approaching the Florida Panhandle, Northeast Florida will see some of the fringe impacts from this storm.

Action News Jax Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh says the impacts could be significant as we could see isolated tornados, flooding rains, and lightning from the storms.

“The morning mix of clouds and sun will quickly give way to some very heavy showers and thunderstorms that are likely to pass through the area from south to north rather quickly today in multiple bands. There won’t be just one band but several bands of heavy rain and storms.” Mike says.

Mike says any of the bands are capable of producing 30 to 40 mile per hour wind gusts and an isolated tornado or waterspout as we go through the afternoon.

Mike says in between the bands of rain its possible we could get some sunshine.

We also have a high rip current risk at our beaches today. Mike says the best advice with dealing with rip currents is to just stay out of the water.

“And if you do decide to go in the water, make sure you have a buddy, whether its surfing or swimming, and is near a lifeguard at all possible.” Mike says

Mike says for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we’ll see partly cloudy skies in the morning giving way to midday and afternoon showers and storms which could produce frequent lightning, gusty winds, heavy downpours, and an isolated and occasional severe storm.
