FDOT plans on fixing lane issues in Jacksonville neighborhood

Cassat Avenue (Christy Turner/Action News Jax)

Jacksonville, FL — Crews recently restriped Cassat Avenue between San Juan Avenue and Blanding Boulevard.

It includes a left lane, a narrow center lane, and a right lane.

However, neighbors said it was confusing because it was unclear what the lanes were intended for.

Action News Jax brought neighbors’ concerns to FDOT. The agency said the left lane is for vehicle traffic, the narrow center lane is for bicyclist traffic and the right lane is for on-street parking.

To reduce confusion until permanent striping is completed, FDOT said it has directed the contractor to either close the bicycle lane or paint temporary symbols/markings in that lane to indicate that it is intended for cyclists and not vehicles

FDOT said in the meantime, additional signage was placed to help clarify the lane configuration.

The project team is also coordinating with the FDOT Design office to improve the striping at the intersection of Cassat and San Juan Avenue.

A spokesperson for FDOT said roadway construction items have been delayed by bad weather, as well as the fact that the contractor is not permitted to close traffic lanes during the day to complete the work.

FDOT said the project team is doing everything within its power to address these issues as quickly as possible to alleviate confusion and ensure the safety of drivers.
