JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) marks 25 years of its Celebrate Safely, Designate a Driver Campaign by showcasing its 2022 mocktail ‘Recipes for the Road’ booklet for designated drivers. The campaign supports FDOT’s statewide Target Zero initiative aimed at reducing transportation-related injuries and deaths to zero by focusing on thwarting dangerous driving behaviors before serious and fatal crashes occur.
The annual event, now in its 25th year, acknowledges the importance of assigning a designated driver, especially during the holidays. According to FDOT’s District Two Secretary Greg Evans, one out of every four traffic fatalities in Florida involves a driver impaired by alcohol or drugs.
“The Celebrate Safety, Designate a Driver Campaign and ‘Recipes for the Road’ continue to play an important role in helping us reach our target of zero fatalities on Florida roadways,” he said.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s Public Information Officer, Jacob Pickering describes mocktails as the perfect way for designated drivers to blend in at a party.
“It’s a lot better than sipping on a Coke or sipping on a Sprite at your holiday party,” he said. “This helps you blend in with the crowd but also remain 100 percent safe and 100 percent safe able to drive home and drive your loved ones home who have been drinking.”
Pickering noted that FDOT’s yearly campaign works in tandem with local partners, including law enforcement agencies, restaurants, bars and hospitality venues to “promote safety and respect on Florida roadways by increasing awareness of responsible alcohol use at holiday events.”
“These initiatives promote safe alternatives to driving while impaired,” he said.
Evans added that if you’re a designated driver “we want you to try a Mocktail, enjoy the season with family and friends and get home safely.
Pickering gave a nod to the entire Northeast Florida’s Community Traffic Safety Team members, partners, and volunteers that continue to promote traffic safety.
