Lanes reopen following two fatal crashes on Heckscher Drive, A1A; 1 victim identified

Two fatal crashes shut down Heckscher Drive, A1A for miles

Jacksonville, FL — Two separate fatal crashes caused significant delays just east of the Dames Point Bridge, and near the Nassau Sound Bridge to Amelia Island.

The first crash was reported by Florida Highway Patrol just before 8am near the Nassau/Duval County line.  FHP said one person died and a second person was taken from the scene to a local hospital.

An initial crash report from FHP says the driver of a Dodge Journey crossed the center line of A1A heading north into the path of a southbound car, hitting it head-on.  The driver of the other car, a 47-year-old woman from Fernandina Beach, died.  She has not been publicly identified.  The driver of the Dodge Journey sustained serious injuries.

Before 9am, Jacksonville Fire Rescue responded to a crash on Heckscher Drive at Browns Creek that had traffic shut down in both directions until just before Noon.   FHP says 48-year-old Irin Bennett of Fernandina Beach crossed the center line in a Toyota Tacoma and hit a vehicle head-on.  Bennett died at the scene.

Anna Merkel, 32, and her 1-year-old baby were in a GMC Acadia going the other direction when the pickup truck crashed into them, according to FHP. Merkel is in serious condition, and the child is expected to be OK.

FHP says after the initial crash, a box truck rear-ended the GMC, and that driver was not injured.
