All we know, according to the police report, is that the suspect is around 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was wearing dark clothing when they shot and killed Barnes and Powell.

MAD DADS community outreach coordinator AJ Jordan said Barnes’ mother is devastated.

“Right now she’s just in a state of shock. She don’t know what happened,” Jordan said.

Jordan said she didn’t want to speak to the media herself, but wanted the public to know about her son.

Barnes leaves behind a 9-month-old baby girl.

“Her son wanted to be a good father. He wanted to take her to the parks. He wanted to take her to the museums. He wanted to do the things that good, loving fathers do, but his life was cut short due to senseless crime and murder in our city,” Jordan said.

Action News Jax first told you when police said a man and woman, now identified as Barnes and Powell, were found shot next to a car. Both of them were found lying on the ground.

Barnes died at the scene and Powell died at the hospital.

This is the second loss for Barnes’ family.

“She had a son and now he’s gone. Two sons gone,” Jordan said.

Jordan said Barnes’ younger brother Jelijah Barnes, 20, was murdered just this March. The family still doesn’t know what happened to him.

Powell’s friends said she was a precious life taken too soon. They didn’t want to speak on camera but one of her friends said she was very smart, sweet, loving and caring, and this shooting comes as a shock.

Her friend even suggested it may have been that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Family friends have since started a GoFundMe in support of the family.

Police haven’t shared much details surrounding the deaths of the two.

Jordan said the community needs to step up to give both of the victims’ families some closure.

“Speak up. JSO needs our help. The community is the most important part of this puzzle,” Jordan said.
